Fujifilm’s answer to Canon and Nikon’s 70-200mm F2.8 lens is the Fujinon XF50-140mm F2.8 R LM OIS WR lens. A heck of name to remember. In case you didn’t know Fujifilm X-Series cameras have a crop factor of 1.5 which in turn makes this lens a 70-210mm when compared to Full Frame (35mm) lens.

Thanks to a Fujifilm Australia I had the chance to try this lens for a few weeks with my X-T1. This lens like all other Fujinon lenses is a superb quality and build. And its weather sealed and is resistant to dust and water (symbolise by WR in the name). It is a rock solid!!

When combined with the Fujifilm X-T1, the two make a great pair. Although it does feel a bit front heavy for the X-T1 so you want to hold it carefully and mostly by the lens rather than the body of the camera. But I would think its the same for Canon and Nikon lens on a 5D Mark III or D800.

The optical stablisation (symbolised by the OIS in the name) of the lens is claimed to be 5 stops which you need to have especially when you are zoomed all the way at 140mm. It works very well and in low light comes in very handy.

For size comparison here is an image with the Canon 100mm F2.8 Macro lens next to the Fujinon XF50-140mm F2.8 lens. Unfortunately, I didn’t have access to 70-200mm lens from Canon or Nikon so I can’t do side-by-side comparison. However I found some images here and here which give you like for like comparison. You can see this lens is smaller and slimmer than both of its equivalent.

All the Fujinon lens currently own are very sharp and produce excellent quality images. The below image is a straight out RAW to JPEG conversion without any additional post-processing and you can see how sharp the image below is. Not only that at F2.8 you get nice soft & silky bokeh which separates the subject from the background.

What I did find is that tracking subjects with this lens was not working well when I was using Firmware 3.11 but since I upgraded to Firmware 4.0 its much better and accurate. Mind you if your subject is running very fast towards or away from you, you still will have bit of a hit and miss but that’s something I had with my Canon 7D as well. However this has nothing to do with the lens as the focusing is driven by the camera body but I wanted to mention this just in case you are using still the older version of firmware on X-T1.

Overall, I was very impressed with this lens and its optical stablising capabilities. It definitely has all the professional qualities that will not disappoint its owner.
