A great new tool for Lightroom called Lightroom Analytics is available (from version 3 to 5 of Lightroom) as a Plugin for your Lightroom which allow you to analyse your photographs and paint a picture of what kind of photographer you are.

  • Which camera you use most (if you have a few cameras)?
  • What kind of settings you commonly use with your camera eg. Aperture, Shutter or Manual modes?
  • What kind of lens you use? Which do you use most? What focal range you mostly use?
  • How do you modify your photos?

Lightroom Analytics

So I decided to give it a try and see what behaviour or pattern would I see. Head over to Lightroom Analytics and download:

  • The plugin – Installed in Lightroom and exports data for selected photos
  • The viewer – run locally on your computer (just open the HTML page in the zip file) to analyse the exported data

I exported data from all my photos from last year which was about over 10K and it took about 5mins to export. So in 2013 I used my trusty Canon 7D for majority of the time.

Of course my camera breakdown for 2013 is my Canon 7D for majority of the time, the other times its my iPhone or Canon IXUS 300 compact camera. You also see that most of my shooting is done without Flash and only 11% with flash, which is probably correct as most of the time I shoot in natural light indoors or outdoors.Lightroom Analytics Camera Info Here you can see that lot of the time I’m not using Exposure bias or compensation as its known as. Most of the time I am shooting at reasonably OK shutter speeds but at many times I go below 1/60th of a second which is true as lot of these would be handheld shots and often enough they are not the sharpest images. I know that about my shooting style but this helps me visualise.

The much slower shutter speed of 1/2 second or slower is usually on a tripod and are landscape shots. Some of which are long exposures getting close to 4 seconds and more.Lightroom Analytics Details With my various range of Lens, my most popular lens is my Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM lens and secondly is my now sold Sigma 8-16mm lens which I sold mid last year. Then its my Prime lens and my favourite one which is Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM lens, wisely so as I love the images this lens produces, macro or portraits.Lightroom Analytics - Lens Usage

So I am very glad I decided to download and try out this plugin. I helps me re-enforce some of the things I know about and highlights others which I didn’t really know.
