Remove Distractions to Create a Powerful Image

Remove Distractions to Create a Powerful Image

There are time when elements in the image may appear to be distractions and therefore deter from being a powerful image. Hence removing certain elements can be a good thing for your image. Some might argue that this makes the image fake or unreal but unless you are a journalist working for the news, it really doesn't matter what you do with the image. The end result is how it makes you feel. Looking at the image below, you can agree the image looks nice. At first glance you won't think anything has been removed, however if that was the case why would I create this blog post. Well in this...

Sea Cliff Bridge – Drone Video

Sea Cliff Bridge – Drone Video

Having just gotten my DJI Phantom 3 my second adventure (almost a year ago now) led me to Sea Cliff Bridge located South of Sydney, I spent some time taking pictures and getting some video footage from this awesome location. Video editing is not as easy as photography so as I learn the tools and techniques I put together some video clips of the locations where I've flown. As this was one of the earlier flights you really find that most of your footage is rubbish and you can't use it as the movements are quite sudden. I have discovered that especially with video footage, you really need to...

Creating Miniaturised Look in Lightroom (Tilt Shift Effect)

Creating Miniaturised Look in Lightroom (Tilt Shift Effect)

Miniaturised effects are very creative way of turning an ordinary photo into a miniaturised one. The result is usually created in post-production but can also achieved with Tilt Shift Lens available for some industry leading DSLRs such as Canon and Nikon. Follow the step below or what the video tutorial to discover how to create this effect in Lightroom. Step 1 Switch to the Develop...

ON1 Photo RAW – Is it the future?

ON1 Photo RAW – Is it the future?

ON1 has released some news about a RAW editor that they have been working on and will be releasing it this fall (northern hemisphere) which would be spring where I am. There are some pretty big claims that it can render Sony 42 Megapixel in a fraction of a second and editing images is pretty much real time. If you are like me and frustrated with Lightroom's bloated workflow and laggy interface then this sounds like good news. Its about time somebody came out with another RAW editor that is not Adobe software and makes editing photos a breeze. ON1 Photo RAW will not only have standard develop...

Quick Look at Raya Pro Blended HDR vs Lightroom HDR

Quick Look at Raya Pro Blended HDR vs Lightroom HDR

In this post, I take a look at the results of two HDR images created using two different software: Raya Pro by Jimmy McIntyre and Adobe Lightroom HDR. The image I used is from my recent trip to Auckland where I visited the North Head location and captured these images using DJI Phantom 3. The images were 5 Bracketed exposures, 1-stop apart so that was -2, -1, 0, +1, +2. Of the 5 images, I used -1, +1, +2 exposures as my Dark, Normal and Bright respectively to create the blended final image. With Raya Pro, I loaded the images in Photoshop CC as layers and did the very simple blending using...

Patters are all around us so when it comes to composing images it requires a unique perspective to understand how to best capture these patterns. How to identify and compose when you patterns capture your attention? Zoom In Tight Get rid of the distractions and zoom in tight as much as you can. By doing this you will emphasise the pattern and remove any surrounding distractions that may be there. Create Perspective Use the pattern to create perspective in image, large to...
