Stock Photography In A Bath Tub

Stock Photography In A Bath Tub

A while ago, I did a blog post on how to shoot stock photography on a budget with little equipment. Even the pros are improvising when they are shooting images for clients or themselves. As you'd already guessed from the title of this post already, in this case Rafał Krasa used a bath tub to capture some images for the camera strap he is launching. However, if you forget this for a minute and just look at the image below. One would think lot of studio equipment has been used to create the final images. However, the setup is very simple as you see in the behind the scenes image. A bath tub, a...

Advantage of taking Multiple Shots of Landscapes

Advantage of taking Multiple Shots of Landscapes

In this post, I wanted to explain why I like to shoot multiple images when capturing Landscapes. Of course the one main advantage is to create bracketed images but that means you are taking different exposure brackets. However, this is not what I mean. Its about taking multiple images of the same scene so you can take best elements from multiple images to create a final image to impress. This can be useful when you have many elements in the scene that are moving such as people, plants, trees, clouds and the ocean. As it happens recently when I was out shooting images at Bondi's Sculptures by...

Unboxing Aputure Amaran LED Light

Unboxing Aputure Amaran LED Light

Last Friday I picked up Apurture Amaran AL-528W to record video podcasts at home. The light has 528 LEDs which you can control with the dial at the back to regulate its power from 10% to 99%. The light remains cool throughout as you would expect from LED light. Its also very light and so you can easily carry it to location in a very handy carry case that it comes in. The light can be powered using mains or Sony Batteries if you are going to be outdoors without power outlet. They also provide a mounting bracket and warm diffusion filter. I loved the lightweight and simple solution, will...

First Hand Look at Aurora HDR

First Hand Look at Aurora HDR

Aurora HDR Pro is finally out and having placed my pre-order I was keenly waiting for its release. Overnight its finally out and of course I had to install it right away on both iMac and the Mac Book Pro. So here is a first hand experience and look at this latest software by MacPhun and Trey Ratcliff. Installation Very easy and quick but as a Mac software you would expect that. Simply download the latest version from MacPhun, unzip the file and move it into your Applications folder. If you have a License key you can install it right away after you start it up or you can run it up in trial...

Staying Safe With Your Drones

Staying Safe With Your Drones

Seems that Drones are getting a lot of news attention these days and all for the bad reasons. People doing stupid things when using their drones to capture video and images, like people flying them when there are bushfires and flying over sports arenas. I also own a drone, DJI Phantom 3 actually and have had it since June 2015. So far to date, I've done 21 flights with it covering a distance of 12 kms or 7.5 miles with over flight time of 2 hrs and 10. This may not seem like much but when you have this baby in the air it takes a lot of practice to control and navigate it. With the two hours...

Where did the HDR Bracketing Options Go in the DJI Go App?

Where did the HDR Bracketing Options Go in the DJI Go App?

Although DJI make great products that change the way we capture video and photographs, the one thing I dislike about them is their DJI Go App. It is that its very cluttered and has many items hidden away. And DJI fail to produce in-depth videos on how to do advanced things in the app, they just have very introductory tutorials. Since the version 2.3.0 (or maybe one before) they moved the already hard to find multiple shots, bracketed shots, HDR and Timed shots. However, when you update the app you are just greeted with the new app and maybe a notice if new firmware is available. They neglect...

Cinematic Crop for Greater Impact

Cinematic Crop for Greater Impact

As much as possible I want to shoot the image correctly in camera so that I don't have to crop the image later in Lightroom or Photoshop. But sometimes cropping creates greater impact for an image no matter how you have taken the original shot. We often have a few ratios typically available to us such as 16:9 or 16:10 which are wide angle crops which create great impact. The one that is often missing is the Cinematic Crop. We all are familiar with this aspect ratio when we watch movies in the Cinema but don't have this ratio in Photoshop or Lightroom. The ratio for Cinematic Crop is 21:9 or...

Always Remember to Look Up

Always Remember to Look Up

Looking up is something we don't do very often in our daily lives, in fact our society has become accustomed to looking down at our smartphones. And when I say up I don't mean looking up in the sky to spot a plane or superman I mean looking vertically above our head 90 degrees. So when photographing its often a perspective you can neglect to capture as its not a natural habit to you. However I find that this gives you some amazing perspectives especially inside buildings and results in captivating images. Let's look at some of the images below and how they are taken. Another advantage of...
