Free Calendar Wallpaper – October 2015

This month's wallpaper takes us to Barcelona, Spain where we walk the streets and passages near the Cathedral of Barcelona you walk under this overpass connecting these old 13th Century buildings and you look up to see this amazing carvings done in stone. The symmetry is not only intriguing but done so precisely that it makes you wonder how without todays computerised world how they did this kind of work. The photo was taken handheld with Fujifilm X-T1 using the XF 18-135mm F3.5-5.6 LM OIS WR Lens @ F4.0 1/7th of a second ISO 400. The image stablisation on this lens works like a charm, there...

Fujinon XF50-140mm F2.8 R LM OIS WR

Fujinon XF50-140mm F2.8 R LM OIS WR

Fujifilm's answer to Canon and Nikon's 70-200mm F2.8 lens is the Fujinon XF50-140mm F2.8 R LM OIS WR lens. A heck of name to remember. In case you didn't know Fujifilm X-Series cameras have a crop factor of 1.5 which in turn makes this lens a 70-210mm when compared to Full Frame (35mm) lens. Thanks to a Fujifilm Australia I had the chance to try this lens for a few weeks with my X-T1. This lens like all other Fujinon lenses is a superb quality and build. And its weather sealed and is resistant to dust and water (symbolise by WR in the name). It is a rock solid!! When combined with the...

Editing Correcting Image Capture Time in Lightroom

Editing Correcting Image Capture Time in Lightroom

Remembering to set the correct date and time on my camera when I travel has always been a challenge for me.
I get too excited and focused on capturing my planned images when I’m travelling that I don’t remember to set the correct time on my camera. When I did remember to set it, I would forget to change it back I got back home. So one way or another this was a constant battle for me.

My First 6 months with Fujifilm X-T1 – Shooting HDR

My First 6 months with Fujifilm X-T1 – Shooting HDR

HDR is one of the post popular photography styles. Thanks to pioneers like Trey Ratcliff from Stuckincustoms.com who has practiced and promoted this form of photography style for years. So if you are new to HDR I suggest you check out Trey's Free HDR tutorial but those who are curious HDR is the process of taking multiple exposures either 1 or 2 stops apart and then combining these images using HDR software on the computer. This post is about HDR and is a continuation of my series of the X-T1 where I have shared previously this camera performs for portraits and travel. Fuji X-T1 has a...

Beginner’s Tip: One click fix to Correct White Balance in Lightroom

Beginner’s Tip: One click fix to Correct White Balance in Lightroom

One of the main things I struggled with when I started photography was getting the White Balance correct. For those who don't know, an incorrect white balance is when the image ends up being either too blue or too yellow in colour due to the lighting in the room. If you are just starting up with your first camera the chances are you are shooting in JPEG images which don't have any white balance information built-in to them. This means you don't have the flexibility or the knowledge (yet) of shooting in RAW. But what people often don't know that Lightroom has a very easy fix for fixing this...

DJI Phantom 3 – Wollongong, New South Wales

DJI Phantom 3 – Wollongong, New South Wales

A quick edit using the DJI Phantom 3 App to create this video. While visiting Wollongong this morning for a meeting I stopped over the Lighthouse and Sea Cliff Bridge to take a few videos and photos. The wind was very strong at the Lighthouse and I could feel that the DJI Phantom 3 was struggling to push against the wind and remain steady. So only got a short flying time there although the location is pretty cool. Then I drove via the Sea Cliff Bridge heading back to Sydney and scouted a location to get down to the rocks under this bridge. The wind was not as strong as it was shielded by the...

Free Calendar Wallpaper – July 2015

This month's wallpaper comes from La Conciergerie, Paris. It was taken back in 2013 when I visited Paris and stopped over to visit this tourist attraction. The entry ticket was pretty cheap, 8 Euros I think and in the middle of the afternoon there was no queue. I went in and took my time setting up the tripod and taking many images. The security guard spotted me from his chair he was sitting on and told me "no tripods" (with a french accent of course). I said ok and moved on but as he was lazy to get off his chair and check again, I just picked different angles and perspectives while being...

When You Forget To Take ND Filter

When You Forget To Take ND Filter

ND filters (or Neutral Density filters) are used to capture time moving in your image by increasing the exposure time of your shot. This technique is called Long Exposure photography and I did talk about it in an earlier post The Black Glass where I talked about how to use this filter. I guess this is the opposite of that post as we look at what you do when you forget to bring your ND filter with you and you suddenly get a great opportunity presents itself but you don't have the filter in your bag. Its resting back in the studio or at home. There is a waterfall in front of you and you want...

My First 6 months with Fujifilm X-T1 – Travel

Since my move to Fuji X-T1 late November in 2014. I've been using this camera religiously and have only gone back to my Canon 7D twice during this period for some Macro shots. During my 6 month journey I have used my X-T1 for Portraits, Travel, Landscapes, Ultra-Wide Angle and HDR images. In these series of posts I will cover my experience through each. When traveling I prefer to travel light, as I have been through the phases of my photography journey where have carried all my gear in big and backbreaking bags. After various arguments with flight crews about carry on limits and a Hernia...

My First 6 months with Fujifilm X-T1 – Portraits

In this series of posts where I look back on my 6 month journey with Fujifilm X-T1, let's discuss portraits. My choice of gear for this is the 56mm F1.2 lens. This lens is small and light but the build quality is better than any Canon Red ring or Nikon Gold ring lens. The portraits at wide open F1.2 can be a little hit and a miss depending upon the lighting conditions and you distance from the subject. It does take some practice with the X-T1 to nail the focus. Initially I used the Multi-focus point option which may not lock-in focus at the exact point you want to be focusing and with the...
