Remove UV filter at Night

Remove UV filter at Night

Here is a quick tip that I knew but didn't realise until I faced a problem when shooting a cityscape at night. Every photo I took I noticed strange lights and glow in the final image that was taken. I gave the UV filter a nice clean with the cleaning cloth but still no luck. After a few minutes I realised that it may be internal reflections caused by the UV filter due to the long exposure and all the lights in the shot. I took the filter off the lens and bingo!! The photos were clean as a whistle. Check out the before and after and remember to take the UV filter off the lens when shooting at...

Coogee to Bondi

Coogee to Bondi

It was a winters day and an early morning start. Woke up 4am to pick up a few guys and drove for 1hr to Bondi Beach which was the rendezvous point. There were six people who took part in this Photo Walk on 27th August. We eagerly then headed to Coogee beach to watch the sunrise from the rocks which didn't happen, so we walked towards Bondi Beach along the coast, through some amazing sights and breathtaking views towards Bondi Beach. Eventually getting there at 9.30am and covering over 7kms. Everybody had lots of fun and enjoyed snapping away with their camera. Looking forward to the next...

Taking Great Shilhouettes

Taking Great Shilhouettes

It's been awhile since I wrote a blog post. So, here goes...in this post we will look at how to take great Silhouettes. Silhouettes Silhouettes are a lot of fun and can give a great visual impact which we may not see often. Our eye has great ability to be able to pick up details in dark and bright areas at the same time, which cameras can't do. You will either have under exposed (too dark) or over exposed (too bright) photos. Anyway, to create a silhouette all you need is your camera, subject and light source. The main objective is to under expose our photos to create a silhouette. Equipment...

Holidays are a time to enjoy, relax and be with loved ones. Choosing what camera gear to take for your holiday can be tough decision. Tidy up your photo library

Tidy up your photo library

In this digital age of photography, it is cheap to take a lot of photos. People often comment amongst family and friend. I came back from my holiday with 2000+ photos. That does not really imply that you have 2000 amazing photos. The truth is probably 50-60% will be keepers the rest get deleted straight away. But this doesn't happen very often. Myself included. You take lots of photos, you come back and download them on your computer consuming a few Gigs of space. However we never spend the time to tidy up and delete unwanted photos or bad shots. I have been making a habit of reviewing all...

Paris Airport – Skylight

Paris Airport – Skylight

Often enough when we photography we look front, back, left and right for interesting subjects to photograph. Two other directions that often get omitted are Up and Down. Here is a perfect example of looking up. A skylight at Paris Airport. Exposed correctly to keep the detail in the skylight renders the ceiling completely black. Then some processing in Camera+ and you are done.

Dubai the Land of Riches

Dubai the Land of Riches

Dubai the Land of Riches, is absolutely amazing. The land of sand, oil, gold and magnificent landscapes. I had the opportunity to stop over in Dubai during a work trip so spent two nights in Dubai in June 2011. Which is not a ideal, as it's a hot city as it is, but in June it's ridiculously hot. If you are a frequent user of your camera and shoot a lot of photos you would know that Summer is not a good time to shoot in anywhere. Why? Because of the haze in the air during summer's hot weather. So there was only limited times where you can take some good shots. Shoot early in the morning or...

Backlit Flowers

Backlit Flowers

Flowers are always an interesting subject to shoot. You can play with depth of field (DOF), Macro, Water drops and lighting. This weekend I spent half a hour playing with some flowers that my wife had bought. I wanted to try something with lighting and particularly with one light. I used my speed light Nissin DI622 (which has been hacked to trigger with radio trigger. Mod Di622 Speedlight). As you gathered from the title of this post, the flowers will be lit from the back, but because the speed light flash burst is so strong being a small source of light, I wanted to turn that into a big...

EF 50mm 1.8 reviewed by Chris Gampat

Canon EF 50mm 1.8 is a great little lense that is excellent value for money. Its build quality is although basic but its a sharp lense for low light or portraits. A must have for every photographer, you won't regret it. Read further this great review at The Phoblogopher by Chris Gampat
