Capture one

In this video, I will show you 3 ways to quickly straighten an image that may be slightly tilted or not perfectly horizontal when captured in camera.

Not sure if other people have this issue but I find often that some of my images will be slightly tilting to the right or left but mostly right. Maybe when I am pressing the shutter button the camera is not steady in my hand.

This is not an issue when I use a Tripod to shoot the images, they are levelled just fine.

So here are three steps:

  1. Crop Tool – Use the Rotate and Adjust functionality in the Crop Tool to straighten the image. This tool is available in the Develop Module of Lightroom. Move the cursor outside the edge of the image until a curvy two-arrow icon appears, this means that you are now ready to rotate the image into the desired direction in order to straighten it. Lightroom will also present you a very detailed grid which you can use to adjust the image as a guide. This makes the task much easier.
  2. Crop Tool – Use the digital Level to click down and draw a line along a large horizontal part of the image that you believe should be levelled which isn’t currently straight. ¬†As soon as you click out, this will allow Lightroom to work out how much rotation is required in the image to straighten and level it. And then your image should be straight, you can do further finer adjustments using the angle value next to the Level tool or re-do the Level on another part of the image to help straighten it.
  3. Transform Module > Level Option – This will allow Lightroom to evaluate the whole image and identify based on horizontal lines, to automatically rotate the image to straighten and level it.
