Free Calendar Wallpaper – April 2015

This months wallpaper comes from Chicago, Illinois, United States of America. Its called "Calder's Flamingo" or "Flamingo Sculpture". I took this image last year in September when I was there on route to a work conference. I used a Gorillapod to capture the image while using a ND filter which was able to make on the people walking around disappear. You can see some ghostly impressions but I think they add a level of interest and give a sense of size. If you read more about how you can use ND Filter check out my other post on Black Glass. The image was then edited using one of my HDR...

Knowing When to Under Expose

Knowing When to Under Expose

This is something that can be tricky to understand so I will keep this as simple as possible. You camera whatever that is is programmed from the manufacture to capture certain amount of light in each shot. So when you are shooting something against white or bright light the camera will think there is too much light so it will Under Expose the image and when you are shooting something against black or dark area or at night then your camera will Over Expose the image to capture required amount of light. So in which situation you would under expose, well this would be when your camera is...

Take Minutes off Your Lightroom Workflow with Solo Mode

Take Minutes off Your Lightroom Workflow with Solo Mode

Whatever your workflow is Lightroom knowing this technique will clean up and speed up your process. Both the Left and Right Module panels in Lightroom can be configured in this mode, its called the Solo Mode. When activated, Solo Mode only keep your current module which you are working on open. If you switch to another module in the same panel it will close the previous one. Therefore you no longer have to scroll forever to navigate between modules. Additionally this mode will make your Lightroom interface a lot more tidier as you won't have all the modules you work in open. To activate Solo...

3 Reasons to Shoot in Burst Mode when Photographing Kids

3 Reasons to Shoot in Burst Mode when Photographing Kids

Work the Scene

Work the Scene

What is working the scene? This is something I learnt a while ago. It means that once you are in front of a good subject or location, don't just point and shoot but instead spend some time looking for around  for good compositions and clean shots. While in Paris, I visited the Sacré-Cœur Basilica (also known as The Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Paris) located in Montmarte, I see this character posing near the steps. From a distance you'd mistake him for a statue but when you get up close you find that he's real, although holds very still. My first instinct is to grab the camera and shoot,...

Creating Warp Speed Effect With Your DSLR

Creating Warp Speed Effect With Your DSLR

Most of us have heard the phrase "Warp Speed" in some shape or form in our life. I remember it from "Star Trek" the original series which I used to watch in the late 80s, others may remember the newer series of this show but I haven't seen these so don't know if they are still using these phrase or not. Anyway this post is not about which version of Star Trek series or movies is your favourite but about how to create similar look with your photography. The technique is quite simple but capturing the result can take some effort. Its all about capturing motion of moving in one direction only....
